Position Summary:
The Engineer Intern works under the supervision of the Senior Parish Engineer and is responsible for assisting with the coordination of various operational, maintenance, construction, and engineering projects for the Parish. This position requires independent effort and uses original thinking to develop, recommend or initiate plans, policies, and procedures. Employee is considered essential personnel and must report to work if required by their manager during any Emergency or Natural Disaster occurs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Reviews and prepares various technical data and documentation to ensure accuracy and provide recommendations as necessary.
Provides technical recommendations for problems and assists the department administration with their implementation to ensure success.
Manages various engineering and construction projects to ensure projects are technically sound, cost-effective, and on schedule.
Prepares drawings/sketches for inclusion in permits and other engineering documents.
Tracks and manages permits for drainage maintenance work and utility installation.
Tracks and manages processes for acquiring Parish servitudes.
Assist in the development and maintenance of Operations and Maintenance Manuals for Pump Stations owned and operated by the Parish.
Assigned to EOC as essential staff during major storm events to assist with Public Works response.
Performing additional duties as needed.
Competencies:
Knowledge of a broad body of rules, procedures, or operations requiring extensive training and/or experience to perform a wide variety of non-standard assignments and resolve a wide range of problems.
Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques for construction and maintenance.
Ability to interpret blueprints and specifications.
Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, AutoCad, Asset Works, Access, GIS, etc.
Working knowledge of the geography of the Parish.
Knowledge of and experience complying with safety principles, practices, and procedures.
Excellent communication skills via email, phone, in-person and virtual with both the public and internal staff.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and work within tight deadlines, while maintaining disciplined focus on parish goals and measurable objectives.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to solve complex problems.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required (Civil or Mechanical preferred)
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License
Engineering Intern certificate (If not current, must acquire within 1 year of being hired.)
Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed indoors. On occasion, the position will be required to work outdoors to inspect project sites.
Physical Requirements:
Employee will spend most time in the office, on telephone, or operating other office equipment, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. The position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer. Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at a time. On occasion, the position will be required to work outdoors in various weather conditions and walking on uneven terrain.
