Equipment Operator III

Position Summary:
The Equipment Operator III, under general supervision, performs semi-skilled operation and maintenance of light to heavy weight trucks and related equipment used in the hauling and transfer of heavy equipment and other materials to and from various job sites in the parish.

Employee is considered essential personnel and must report to work if required by their manager during any Emergency or Natural Disaster occurs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Operates or drives light and medium weight equipment such as dozers, excavators, skid-steers, dump truck, trash truck, or open-bed truck, vacuum truck (culvert), lawn mowers, weed eaters, shovels, rakes, brooms, as well as any other maintenance equipment.
Responsible for the inspection and maintenance of roads, main drainage ditches, and canals within the parish; including asphalt repairs, culvert replacements, sweeping ditches, catch basin replacements, and shoulder / levee repairs.
Inspects machines and trucks before daily usage to ensure they are fully operational with no mechanical issues.
Responsible for obtaining and securing all tools needed for jobs.
Changes machine attachments.
Assists foreman with making and printing dotties, job scopes or setup and making decisions in their absence.
Receive and respond to requests or tasks needed to assess complaints and issues.
Responsible for assisting during tree cutting and removal.
Clear roadways and bridges after emergencies or natural disasters.
Adjusts equipment as needed for specialized operational needs.
Hauls all necessary equipment and materials needed for jobs.
Loads and unloads equipment on and off trailers and responsible for safely hauling of equipment.
Assists with training of Operators I & II’s.
Maintains records of mileage, fuel usage and number of loads hauled to the landfill and prepares reports as needed to provide to supervision.
Reports mechanical difficulties to the appropriate personnel for repairs to be handled.
Assists in truck maintenance and performs minor repair work such as changing flat tires.
Provides routine and minor maintenance to vehicles and equipment such as check gas, oil, hydraulic fluids, and other lubricant levels as required by DOT pre trip inspections.
Assists with keeping work areas clean, swept and in orderly condition.
Washes and/or steam cleaning equipment used in daily work routine; assists in minor equipment maintenance; and performs minor repair work such as fixing flat tires on the tractor or similar equipment.
Follows all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe operations when completing tasks.
Performs daily safety meetings with employees when replacing the Area Foreman in his absence.
Responsible for the work area safety and traffic control.
Use surveying equipment to check grades and establish profiles.

Competencies:
Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions in the operation of light and/or medium maintenance equipment.
Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey and exchange information.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing while understanding and following instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
Ability to learn and work with software programs including but not limited to grade instruments and dotties.
Knowledge of and experience complying with safety principles, practices, and procedures.

Education and Experience:
1-2 years of operation of medium to heavy motorized equipment OR equivalent combination of experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
High school diploma or GED

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Louisiana Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake, Combination, and Tanker Endorsement

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed outdoors.

Physical Requirements:
Work involves moderate risks or discomforts and requires physical exertion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demand requirements are for heavy work.
