Position Summary:
The Pump Operator Helper, under direct supervision of the Director of Public Works or designee, performs assistance to the Pump Operator with the operations and maintenance of St. Charles Parish Pump Station Facilities.

Employee is considered Essential Personnel and must report to work during any emergency or natural disaster that occurs.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Assist in the operation and inspection of drainage pump facilities and maintenance of bar screens.
Assist with pulling and repairing pumps.
Assist changing and replacing pump parts such as batteries, alternators, and starters.
Ensure pumping station is cleaned inside and out as well as maintaining pump station structures.
Maintain grass at pump station structures.
Respond to callouts when needed.
Clear major water canals (by spraying weed killer) to ensure proper water flow as well as making sure levees are clear of debris.
Maintain equipment by greasing, monitoring water, oil, and coolant level in pumps, checking belts and cleaning and painting.
Responsible for inspecting vehicle and equipment for proper operation; keeping vehicle clean on both inside and out as well as reporting any malfunctions or issues.
Following all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe operations when completing tasks.
Maintain and prepares daily work logs and work orders.
Performing additional duties as needed.
Competencies:
Knowledge of routine, repetitive tasks which typically includes following step-by-step instructions and requires little or no previous training or experience.
Knowledge related to the operations of running motors and proper shutdown.
Ability to operate light to medium equipment needed for grass maintenance as well as pump work – bobcats, boat (for water way spraying), overhead cranes, bush hogs, etc.
Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions for use in the field of work.
Ability to use computer programs/software systems necessary the course and scope of job.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing while understanding, carrying out and following written and oral instructions.
Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, including towing trailers.
Ability to perform the physical labor requirements of the position.
Ability to apply effective problem-solving skills
Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Ability to work over water using step ladder or flat boats for necessary repairs.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED with little or no formal training
Some mechanical knowledge preferred
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class “E” Louisiana Driver’s License
Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed outdoors and could involve working in hazardous weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to physically operate a variety of machinery, and motorized vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move or lift objects. Requires stretching, grasping, pulling, pushing or otherwise moving objects. Physical demands are for heavy work.
