Taxing Districts Roll Back Millages to 30 Year Low

Post Date:September 09, 2025 9:00 AM

St. Charles Parish taxing districts have rolled back millage rates, decreasing property taxes for property owners to a thirty-year low of 100.96. In 2019, millage rates in St. Charles Parish were at a high of 118.41. The Parish Council, Sheriff, and School Board all elected to roll back millages to the lowest rate since 1992, resulting in roughly $105 million savings for taxpayers over the last five years.

“Lowering millage rates is good for everyone—our residents, small businesses, and industrial facilities alike,” Assessor Tab Troxler said. “I’m proud that we’ve reduced rates again this year, and I’m confident we can continue this trend in the future to keep easing the burden on taxpayers while supporting the growth and strength of our parish.”

Over the last five years, the change in millages levied by the St. Charles Parish Government has saved taxpayers $10.2 million, a 15% reduction. These savings are reflected in the property taxes residents and businesses pay annually.

“The strength of our economy in St. Charles Parish allows us to roll back millage rates, providing relief to both residents and businesses while still funding vital services. This shows our commitment to fiscal responsibility while also creating a business-friendly environment that keeps St. Charles Parish growing,” said Parish President Matthew Jewell.

“Through responsible financial stewardship, the Parish President and Council have delivered meaningful savings to taxpayers over the past five years. We remain focused on building on this progress by identifying additional opportunities for savings while maintaining the quality of services our residents expect and deserve,” Council Chairwoman Holly Fonseca said.

Millage rates determine how much residents pay in property taxes. Residents will see lower property tax bills next year with the approved reduction. Despite the decrease in millage rates, taxing bodies will still experience revenue growth.

"These millage reductions reflect a long-term approach to planning that benefits both our schools and our community. By carefully managing resources, we are ensuring students have what they need to succeed today while also strengthening the future of St. Charles Parish," School Superintendent Ken Oertling said.

"For five consecutive years, the St. Charles Parish School Board has made decisions that both ease the burden on taxpayers and uphold the excellence of our school system. These actions reflect our dedication to careful financial stewardship and to doing what is best for our students, families, and community," School Board President Ray Gregson said.

“I am pleased that the St. Charles Parish Law Enforcement District has been able to reduce our Millage for the 3rd year in a row for a total of 1.75 mills. This results in a total savings to property owners of $ 4,297,000 dollars,” Sheriff Greg Champagne said.

One mill in St. Charles Parish now generates $2,558,829. Official millage rollbacks must be submitted to the Assessor’s Office and Legislative Auditor later this month.
