St. Charles Parish will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the Sunset Pump Station automatic bar screen cleaners project, a major drainage improvement designed to remove debris before it enters the pumping system and enhance overall station performance. The ribbon cutting will be held on Monday, March 16, at 10:00 a.m. at 198 Kerry's Pointe West in Bayou Gauche.
The Sunset Pump Station drains more than 7,000 acres of watershed, where debris buildup has historically made it difficult for the station to operate efficiently. In the past, crews were required to manually remove debris from the station entrance in small vessels, creating safety risks and slowing drainage operations. The new automatic bar screen cleaners will continuously remove debris from the system, allowing water to drain more efficiently while improving function and safety at the station.
The renovation also included electrical and reliability improvements to prepare the station for future planned engine enhancements.
